Opium is a bitter yellowish-brown drug prepared from the dried juice of unrip
pods of the opium poppy, containing alkaloids such as morphine, narcotine, codeine,
and papaverine, and used as an anesthetic.    Habitual use induces strong addiction, and
excessive use is usually fatal.
Something that numbs or stupefies is called opium.
Opium Poppies are plants, namely Papaver Sonniferum, originating in Asia Minor, having
grayish-green leaves, and various colored flowers.    The juice of its unripened pods
is the original source of various opiates, used medicinally to numb pain, and induce
euphoria.
